About Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football

Few programs in college football carry the weight of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football. Founded in 1887, the Fighting Irish have built one of the sport's most decorated legacies from their home in Notre Dame, Indiana, where the 77,622-seat Notre Dame Stadium fills to capacity for nearly every game. Notre Dame competes as one of the few remaining FBS independents, playing a truly national schedule that brings marquee opponents to campus year after year. The program's all-time record sits above .730, placing it among the winningest in college football history.

The coaching lineage at Notre Dame reads like a who's who of the sport. Knute Rockne posted the highest winning percentage (.881) of any FBS coach during his tenure from 1918 to 1930, delivering three national championships and producing legends like George Gipp and the famed "Four Horsemen" backfield of 1924. Frank Leahy followed with four national titles and the second-highest winning percentage (.864) in college football history, anchoring a stretch in the 1940s where the Irish went four consecutive seasons without a loss. Ara Parseghian captured two more championships in 1966 and 1973, and Lou Holtz led the 1988 squad to Notre Dame's most recent undefeated season and 11th claimed national title.

Every home game at Notre Dame Stadium has been broadcast nationally by NBC since 1991, a partnership that reflects the program's singular place in the sport. The gold helmets, painted with 23.9 karat gold particles sourced from the university's Golden Dome, are among the most recognizable in all of football. The "Notre Dame Victory March" fight song, the Leprechaun mascot, and the Band of the Fighting Irish all contribute to a gameday atmosphere rooted in over a century of tradition.

How many national championships has Notre Dame Fighting Irish football won?

Notre Dame officially claims 11 national championships, including eight awarded by the AP Poll or Coaches' Poll, which is the second most in the poll era. Those title years are 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, and 1988. The earliest three were recognized by the Dickinson System under Knute Rockne, while the remaining eight came under Frank Leahy (four titles), Ara Parseghian (two), Dan Devine (one), and Lou Holtz (one). Notre Dame has also been named national champion by at least one NCAA-designated major selector in 11 additional seasons beyond the 11 it officially claims.

Who are the biggest rivals of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football?

Notre Dame's primary rivalry is with the USC Trojans Football, a series that dates back to 1926 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest in college football. The two programs compete for the Jeweled Shillelagh trophy, and the series has produced some of the sport's most iconic moments, including the 1977 "Green Jersey" game and the 2005 "Bush Push" game. Other significant Notre Dame rivalries include Michigan, which hosted the very first game in program history in 1887, Michigan State (with the Megaphone Trophy and the 1966 "Game of the Century"), and Navy, against whom the Irish once held a 43-game win streak, the longest by one team over another in FBS history.

Who are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football Heisman Trophy winners?

Seven Notre Dame players have won the Heisman Trophy, tying the program with Oklahoma for the second most of any university. The winners are:
  • Angelo Bertelli, quarterback, 1943
  • Johnny Lujack, quarterback, 1947
  • Leon Hart, end, 1949
  • Johnny Lattner, halfback, 1953
  • Paul Hornung, quarterback, 1956
  • John Huarte, quarterback, 1964
  • Tim Brown, wide receiver, 1987
Hornung remains the only Heisman winner to receive the award while playing for a team with a losing record. The program has also produced 113 Consensus All-Americans, more than any other university, along with 50 inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame.

What is the gameday experience like for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football?

Notre Dame Stadium delivers one of the most tradition-rich gameday experiences in college football. Before kickoff, players touch the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign on their way out of the locker room, a tradition Lou Holtz started in 1986. The Band of the Fighting Irish performs under the Golden Dome earlier on game day, and the crowd fills a stadium that has hosted college football since 1930. Between the third and fourth quarters, the band plays the finale to the 1812 Overture while fans wave their arms in unison. After every game, win or loss, the team turns to the student section and raises their helmets in salute before the crowd links arms for the alma mater, "Notre Dame, Our Mother." The program's nationwide following, known as "subway alumni," extends well beyond campus, drawing fans who connect with the Fighting Irish whether or not they attended the university.
