2014 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Schedule

Coming off of a decent 2013 season, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be looking to continue their upward trend that resulted in a New Era Pinstripe Bowl win over Rutgers. For most teams, a 9-4 record (which the Irish had in 2013) is a good season, but expectations are a bit higher in Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are one of the most popular, iconic and powerful football teams in the NCAA, with all kinds of big-name players passing through their ranks over the last several decades. The Fighting Irish are known for being a football powerhouse, and their status as an Independent (meaning they aren't part of any NCAA football conference) means that the team schedule changes from year to year with a varying portion of great matchups.

The Fighting Irish draw fans by the thousands to their own Notre Dame Stadium for every game during football season, and especially when the Irish play teams like the USC Trojans or Michigan Wolverines. There are all kinds of big games on the schedule this season as the Fighting Irish look to make it into a BCS bowl game, and the odds are in Notre Dame's favor to end the season on a high note. The home opener at Notre Dame Stadium will take place on Aug. 30 when the Rice Owls come to town, kicking the season off in style as the Irish look to get off to a good start. Another big game on the home schedule takes place on the following week when the Michigan Wolverines come to Notre Dame on Sept. 6. The Fighting Irish will be looking to avenge last season's 41-30 loss to their rivals at Michigan and this could be one of the most thrilling home games of the season.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that it's only about the home games, as road matchups featuring the Irish can be just as exciting for fans. Come out to an away game and you'll see plenty of Irish colors as Notre Dame takes the fight to the rest of their road schedule in a big way this season. Once you're there in the stands, whether it's a huge home game or an exciting road matchup, you'll definitely be glad that you're not still sitting at home wondering what the atmosphere of the big game is like. Either way, there is sure to be plenty of fanfare around the Irish once again this year.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team Info

With 11 claimed national titles, seven Heisman Trophy winners and dozens and dozens of consensus All-Americans on the roster over the last century, it's no wonder why Notre Dame football gets college fans all kinds of excited. This spring, the Irish also gave their fans plenty to cheer about, not to mention a nice sneak preview that has fans eagerly anticipating the 2014 regular season. Running back Greg Bryant, as many Irish fans already know, looked like a standout in the spring, providing a major spark that they will hope to bring into the season. With a staunch defense and a bunch of offensive playmakers, the Irish are looking to round into form as they look to put together another winning season.

Of course, the Fighting Irish have seen loads of top NFL players through their college years before jumping into the pros, with current NFL players including big names like Manti Te'O, Golden Tate, Sergio Brown and Anthony Fasano. The Irish have also sent players onto the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including former NFL heroes like Curly Lambeau, John McNally, George Trafton, Wayne Millner, George Connor, Paul Hornung, Alan Page, Joe Montana, Nick Buoniconti and Dave Casper. The total of former Notre Dame players to go onto the NFL tops the 400s (and counting), and that's to be expected from a team with multiple Heisman winners.

NCAA Football Experience

Sometimes it seems as though it can, as the Fighting Irish are one of the few independent teams in the NCAA and the only one that receives an automatic bid to a BCS bowl by finishing in the top eight of the final BCS ranking. We all know that it can be tempting to just stay at home and follow the action on your flatscreen, but it's a completely different thing to actually be there when the game is still up in the air and the Fighting Irish are looking to put the final touches on a huge win, as the game springs to a completely different level. Once you're there in the middle of a game that could go either way and fans are on their feet in anticipation of an epic climax, you'll see that it doesn't get any better than this.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team History

Despite the team declining the Big Ten when it extended an invitation to join the conference, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish still have some ongoing rivalries with nearby Big Ten teams, including the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans. In fact, Notre Dame's century-old rivalry with the Wolverines dates back to the late 1800s and is considered Notre Dame's first rivalry. The Fighting Irish and the Wolverines have been playing each other on the football field since 1887, when the two teams first faced off on the turf. Although they do not play each other every year, whenever the NCAA does see a matchup between these two teams, it's a big one.

Similarly, the Irish and the Michigan State Spartans are fierce rivals, and these teams face off every year for the Megaphone Trophy. Notre Dame is leading this series, taking home the trophy more than 45 times. The Irish also have rivalries outside of the Midwest, and especially against the USC Trojans. The Trojans can be considered Notre Dame's No. 1 rival, as the two teams have punched out more national titles and Heisman Trophies than most other college football rivalries out there. The Navy Midshipmen are also a big rival for the Irish, and these two teams have played each other every year since 1927. With plenty of huge rivalries and a tradition that is as prominent as any program in the country, the buzz around the Fighting Irish is always amazing.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Trivia

Did you know that the Irish graduate roughly 99% of its football players?

The Irish are also in the Top 20 ranking by U.S. News & World Report in academics, and has had dozens of All-Americans on their roster over the last several years, making it one of the best universities in the country for student athletes.
