Originally conceived as a film, On Your Toes was unveiled on Broadway in 1936 with a colorful cast that included Ray Bolger
(the scarecrow in Wizard of Oz), Tamara Geva and Monty Woolley. It marked the first time for the book-show musicals to seriously
consider ballet, musically and visually speaking by utilizing classical dance and integrating jazz into its score. Its plot
shines a light on backstage life in a ballet company, and for this work of genius, producer Dwight Deere Wiman enlisted the
prominent choreographer George Balanchine to develop two large-scale ballets. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, the score for one
of these ballets, is offered its first full-length recording. To see On Your Toes today, just click right here on StubHub.

On Your Toes yarns the tale of a young hoofer, the son of vaudevillians, whose mother convinces him to leave the "two-a-day"
and pursue serious ballet. His early efforts at the art are humorous, especially when he tries to participate in Balanchine's
rendition of Scheherazade. But things turn around for the young man when a friend of his present the troupe with a new piece
that tells a modern story through ballet. And the young man, assuming the role of the leading ballerina, and the troupe claim
a decided victory.
