The book Once was written by Enda Walsh retaining most of the songs written by Glen
Hansard and Markéta Irglová, such as the Academy Award-winning "Falling Slowly." The musical premiered at the New
York Theater Workshop in 2011 and then moved to Broadway in 2012. The production got eleven 2012 Tony Award nominations, and
won eight of those awards. In addition to that, the musical won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and the
2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Once premiered at the New York Theater Workshop
on December 6, 2011 (previews from November 15, 2011), and closed on January 15, 2012. Directed by John Tiffany with choreography
by Steven Hoggett, the cast included Steve Kazee (Guy) and Cristin Milioti (Girl). This production was nominated for Lucille
Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical (winner), Outstanding Director, Outstanding Choreographer (winner), Outstanding Scenic
Design (Bob Crowley), Outstanding Lighting Design (Natasha Katz) (winner), Outstanding Sound Design (Clive Goodwin), and Outstanding
Lead Actress. The production won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. The musical later opened on Broadway
at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, 2012, officially on March 18, 2012, again with direction by John Tiffany
and movement by Steven Hoggett. The production won the Drama League Award, Distinguished Production of a Musical for 2011-12.
both the New York Theater Workshop production and the Broadway production, the cast also served as the orchestra. The Broadway
production used a minimalist set, which was a bar in center stage with chairs lining stage left and right. Exiting cast members
merely stepped to the side of the stage and sat down. It was from these chairs that they served as the orchestra. The bar
was used at intermission as a working bar for the refreshment of the customers, instead of having a bar upstairs or outside.
Brantley reviewed the Broadway production in The New York Times, writing: "What was always wonderful about Once, its songs
and its staging, has been magnified. In the meantime its appealing stars, Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti, have only grown
in presence and dimensionality."
A West End Production opened at the Phoenix Theatre on April 9, 2013, with previews
from March 16. A typical Broadway performance runs two hours and 25 minutes.
In late 2013, the first North American
national tour of Once kicked off in Providence, Rhode Island. On September 16, 2013, Melbourne Theatre Company confirmed the
production's Australian premiere as part of its 2014 subscription season, with subscribers earning exclusive access to the
season's first five weeks. The show will run in Australia from October 1 through November 9.
The London production of
Once has been nominated for five Whatsonstage.com Awards, which include Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Declan
Bennett), Best Actress in a Musical (Zrinka Cvitešić), Best Director (John Tiffany), and Best Original Music (Glen
Hansard and Markéta Irglová).
