About Once Seattle

The Tony Award winning musical Once is the innovative new Broadway show that features an ensemble of actors and musicians who play their own instruments onstage. Once follows the story of a Dublin street performer who is about to give up his dream of making it as a musician, until a beautiful young woman suddenly takes an interest in his love songs. Their new romance causes his music to soar, and the audience will get swept up in the whirlwind alongside the characters.

The musical utilizes a minimalist set, with a bar in the center and chairs lining the left and right stage. When cast members exit the scenes, they simply step to the side of the stage and sit down, where they serve as the orchestra while playing instruments. The bar is actually used before the show and during intermission as a working bar for theater goers in attendance.

Once premiered at the American Repertory Theatre in Boston, MA, and was thereafter transferred to New York's Theater Workshop where it debuted on December 6, 2011. Led by director John Tiffany, the original off-Broadway cast included Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti as Guy and Girl. This production was nominated for a number of Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Director, Outstanding Scenic Design, Outstanding Sound Design, and Outstanding Lead Actress. It took home the awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Choreographer, and Outstanding Lighting Design. The production also won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical.

Following its off-Broadway run, Once began Broadway previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater in February 2012, and officially opened on March 18, 2012. Rising to fame after its Broadway debut, Once raked in eleven Tony Award nominations, winning eight for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Sound Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. The Broadway production also won the Drama League Award for Distinguished Production of a Musical for 2011-2012. Once also played in London's West End at the Phoenix Theatre, starring Declan Bennett and Zrinka Cvitešić. After its West End run, Once began its first North American tour in late 2013.
