Progressive death metal band Opeth goes against the grain when it comes to being able to define
the group's sound. Opeth integrates a vast array of inspirations that range from hints of funk, jazz, blues, gothic and even
folk. Nevertheless, they hold their own as one of the most respected bands playing in the metal arena.
Of the band's
variety, Akerfeldt said, "I don't see the point of playing in a band and going just one way when you can do everything. It
would be impossible for us to play just death metal; that is our roots, but we are now a mishmash of everything and not purists
to any form of music. It's impossible for us to do that, and quite frankly I would think of it as boring to be in a band that
plays just metal music. We're not afraid to experiment or to be caught with our pants down, so to speak. That's what keeps

germinated in Stockholm in 1990. Mikael Akerfeldt (vocals, guitar) was joined by other lineup members, who included Peter Lindgren
(guitar); Anders Nordin (drums); and Johan De Farfalla (bass); after numerous personnel changes.
Opeth eventually inked
a deal with English Candlelight and issued a pair of groundbreaking albums. Orchid arrived in 1995, and Morningrise dropped
in 1996. Both albums instantly captured the attention of critics and fans with their brilliance and depth of inspirations.
An invitation was soon extended to Opeth to open for Morbid Angel. Their next release, My Arms, Your Hearse, came out in 1998.
The album included new additions to the lineup: Martin Lopez (drums) and Martin Mendez (bass). The effort was followed by
Still Life (1999). A year later, the band booked its debut U.S. show at Milwaukee's Metalfest. Blackwater Park (2001), came
next issued under the Peaceville record label. They made a record label switch again when Deliverance arrived in 2002 - this
time under the Music For Nations label. Then came Damnation in 2003. Per Wiberg (keyboardist) signed onto the band, making
the band a quintet. Around this time, Opeth moved over to the Roadrunner label and issued Ghost Reveries, which was applauded
by the fans and critics alike. More personnel changes occurred when Lopez and Lindgren exited the band. Martin Axenrot and
Fredrik Akesson replaced them.
But despite lineup changes, the band soldiered on with the release of Watershed in 2008.
In 2010, Opeth honored two decades of existence by hosting a global tour billed as the Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology in
2010. Akerfeldt said, "I can't believe it,... we're celebrating 20 years. I've been in this band ever since I was 16. It's
In 2011, Heritage served as the last album to include Wiberg (keyboardist). Heritage also showcased a new musical
style, as according to Allmusic was "far more prog than death metal. In fact, if anything, it was the sound of the band leaving
death metal behind."
After Heritage's release, Opeth set out on a tour around the world. After their return and a much-deserved
break, they stepped back into the recording studio. The result was Pale Communion, which came out in 2014.
Opeth's studio albums include: Orchid (1995); Morningrise (1996); My Arms, Your Hearse (1998); Still Life (1999);
Blackwater Park (2001); Deliverance (2002); Damnation (2003); Ghost Reveries (2005); Watershed (2008); Heritage (2011); and
Pale Communion (2014).
Did you know that Opeth borrowed its name from a Wilbur Smith novel?
book Sunbird depicts "Opet" as the locale for an ancient empire.
