The Oregon Ballet Theatre company formed as a result of the merger between the Pacific Ballet Theater and the Ballet Oregon
in 1989. A former dancer of the Joffrey Ballet, James Canfield, assumed the role of artistic director of the Oregon Ballet
Theatre from its inception until 2003. Under his tutelage, the company's inventory grew to over 80 ballets, including contemporary
works to evening-length works. In 2003, Christopher Stowell, principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet, became the second
artistic director for the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Stowell's impressive ballet lineage complemented his vast knowledge of the
repertoire, extensive training and tireless dedication to the discipline - all of which are mirrored in the company's programming.

During his tenure with the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Christopher Stowell added the work of Jerome Robbins, Sir Frederick Ashton,
William Forsythe, Lar Lubovitch and Christopher Wheeldon to the repertoire, and elevated the company's inventory of George
Balanchine ballets. Stowell additionally commissioned new works by celebrated contemporary choreographers Trey McIntyre, Yuri
Possokhov, Julia Adam, James Kudelka and Nicolo Fonte. As part of Stowell's revitalization efforts, he created 10 ballets
on Oregon Ballet Theatre's dancers, featuring the first full-length production of Swan Lake (2006); A Midsummer Night's Dream
(2007); The Sleeping Beauty (2010); and Carmen (2011). Stowell eventually turned in his resignation, and Anne Mueller took
over the role as interim artistic director in late 2012.
