The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding minor league hockey and Orlando Solar Bears fans are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire ECHL. On game day at Amway Center, the fans file in and take their seats when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class minor league hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. There are plenty of opportunities to attend an Orlando Solar Bears game this season so be sure to make your way out to Amway Center in 2004.

The League

The ECHL is one of the premiere professional hockey leagues in all of the United States and Canada and 27 of the 30 NHL teams have an affiliation with an ECHL team. More than 500 former ECHL players have gone on to play on teams in the NHL, and the ECHL along with the AHL are the only two leagues in North America covered under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement. The league has been in existence since 1988 and currently has 22 teams as members. Both the Hampton Roads Admirals and the South Carolina Stingrays lead the way in the ECHL with three championships each. The league has its own hall of fame and features outdoor games and all star games each season along with its playoffs and championship, known as the Kelly Cup.

Although the Orlando Solar Bears have only been in the ECHL since 2011, the history of the franchise dates back to 1995 when the original Orlando Solar Beards played in the International Hockey League from 1995 through 2011. After their formation the Orlando Solar Bears became the fourth ECHL teeam to have the name of a former IHL franchise. The Solar Bears became the third hockey franchise to play in the Orlando following the original Solar Bears and the Orlando Seals who played professional hockey from 200 through 2004.
