Taking their name from the ancient Aztec language, Ozomatli began
from auspicious circumstances as the band members were political activists within the great Los Angeles area. They would focus
on community and culture building, using their early years as a performance group to create a cultural arts center in Los
Angeles that would be a key incubator for Ozomatli's early years. The band would find muses in the variety of local music
as well as Los Angeles as a focal point of the global music scene. They would blend regional sensibilities that stem from
California's strong Latino cultural heritage with their own musical appetites, eventually creating a perfect blend of indigenous,
modern, and mainstream sounds that would become the iconic and unforgettable Ozomatli style.
The band would make their
first push into the mainstream recording world with their 1998 debut while signed to the label Almo Sounds. Their early success
would be built on their prominence on the local music scene, but they would break into national and international circles
with televised performances, and the band points to their time on late night talk show Vibe! as one of their true breakout
moments. With a strong word of mouth following, the band's debut would be a breakout success that defined Ozomatli as a successful
act, ensuring their musical future and allowing them to retain creative control over their ethnically influenced, community
The band would hit the tour road with legendary acts such as Carlos Santana and Mana, heading up a constant
tour schedule that would be periodically interrupted by short stints in the studio and numerous trips to the biggest award
shows in the world. The band would soon sign onto Concord Records, opening them up to a more diverse pool of talented producers
as they continued to put out a steady stream of hit records that continued to grow their profile and popularity, both in and
outside North America. To date, the band has showed no signs of slowing down as their Chicano infused sound continues to reach
millions of listeners across the world.
The band's 1998 self titled debut would make waves
across the music industry, with the T-Ray produced album becoming an overnight commercial and critical success. The album
featured a diverse range of sounds, from jazz funk to Cumbia and Reggae, and received coveted four star ratings from both
AllMusic and Rolling Stone. The album would climb to the #7 position on the Latin Albums chart, as well as to the #25 position
on Billboard's Heatseekers. Two singles would spawn from the album, "Super Bowl Sundae" and "Cut Chemist Suite", with the
latter being featured in the third installment of acclaimed video game series Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
Three years later,
the band would make a switch to Interscope Records with the 2001 release of Embrace the Chaos. Their highly anticipated followup
would again wow fans and critics alike, with another four star rating from AllMusic and a B+ from Entertainment Weekly. The
album would be under the production tutelage of talented individuals such as Steve Berlin, Mario Caldato, Jr., and Bob Power,
pushing the band to their first #1 positions on the Billboard Latin and Latin Pop Albums, as well as a #2 showing on Billboard's
Heatseekers chart. The album would feature a medley of hits including "vocal Artillery", "Embrace the Chaos", and "Timido".
The band has dedicated its time, influence, and cash to fight for workers rights across America. They
are considered cultural ambassadors of the United States, cross cultural phenomenons that represent the melting pot of America.
