Pantages Theatre Minneapolis Trivia

Did you know that Pantages Theatre reopened as a cinema house in 1961 with Spartacus?

Though it was previously a movie house as well, opening with film noir classic Gilda in the 1940s, it was opened in a big way (then as the Mann Theatre) in 1961 with Stanley Kubrick's Oscar-winning classic Spartacus, bringing spectacle to the screen in a very big way. Starring Kirk Douglas, Spartacus is the mostly true story of an enslaved gladiator who led a major rebellion against the Roman Empire, back in the days just prior to Julius Caesar's rise. Though Kubrick is known mostly for other classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange, his direction for Spartacus helped make him a cinematic star, guiding the film to four Academy Awards and big returns at the box office.

And when it was first playing at this site, people around town got the message that it was going to be bringing one big show after another over the years – a tradition that Pantages Theatre maintained when it made the switch to live theater and concert events.
