About People Under The Stairs
Hip hop group People
Under The Stairs formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, and they are comprised of Christopher "Thes One" Portugal and Michael "Double
K" Turner. When People Under The Stairs first started making music, they didn't intend on creating an album, but as their
songs grew in volume, they were encourage by their friends to go ahead and make a full-length album. The result was "The Next
Step," an impressive debut album that was recorded using all of their own equipment. In support of a compilation album through
the record company Om Records, People Under The Stairs were able to embark on their first world tour, where they managed to
establish a thriving fan base while in Europe.
People Under The Stairs returned to the studio to begin recording their
next album, "Question in the Form of an Answer," which was released in 2000. Their second album experimented with an interesting
mix of psychedelic rock and jazz, and it was praised for its creativity and new approach to hip hop. Following the release
of their second album, People Under The Stairs were able to kick off another world tour, and they also played at the Glastonbury
Festival and Essential Music Festival. By 2002, People Under the Stairs had released their next album, "O.S.T.," and they
later joined the Cali-Comm tour with Del the Funky Homosapien, Planet Asia, and more.
Since the late 90s, People Under
The Stairs continued to record and tour, and some of their later records include "Stepfather" in 2006, "Fun DMC" in 2008,
"Carried Away" in 2009, "Highlighter" in 2011, and most recently, "12 Step Program" in 2014.
People Under The
Stairs' Breakthrough Album
People Under The Stairs offered the hip hop world a breath of fresh air with their unusual
samplings and creative influences. Their debut album, "The Next Step," was well received by the underground hip hop community,
and they were able to develop a loyal fan base. Their next album, "Question In the Form of an Answer" was released shortly
after, and it produced popular songs like "Youth Explosion," "The Cat," and "We'll Be There." The band continued to release
several more records, including 2006's "Stepfather," which debuted at the number 35 position on the Billboard Independent
Albums chart and number 32 on the Billboard Heatseaker chart. The release of "Stepfather" gave the band more media coverage,
and they were likewise able to garner more attention from a wider audience, notably, a younger generation of fans was eager
to check out their music. As a result, many of their United States tour dates were extended to all ages to accommodate their
new fan base. Since their inception, People Under the Stairs continue to innovate and take hip hop to different levels of
creativity, and the band is currently on tour to support their most recent album, "12 Step Program."
