Trivia:

In 1988, Nickelodeon launched the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, which was a children's version of the People's Choice Awards. However, except for the similar names, the two shows are unrelated. The Teen Choice Awards also have no relation to the People's Choice Awards.

History:

The People's Choice Awards is famed for recognizing some of the biggest stars of modern-day pop culture. The awards ceremony airs on CBS. The show has taken place every year since 1975, and casts votes by the general public. The awards were based on results from Gallup polls until 2005, when the show switched to the use of online voting. Every year, the show takes a survey of all the different categories for favorite actor, actress, movie, solo artist, TV show, or band.

Bob Stivers is the show's creator, and produced the very first show in 1975. The first awards show honored The Sting as 1974's Favorite Picture. It also named Barbra Streisand as the year's Favorite Film Actress, and John Wayne as its Favorite Film Actor. The show reached its highest ratings in 1977, when the ceremony generated 35.3 million viewers. At 1977's show, Farrah Fawcett was named as Favorite Female TV Star, and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was honored as the Favorite Picture.

The award categories have shifted in the years that the show has been active. For instance, the 16th People's Choice Awards showcased categories such as Favorite All-Around Movie (Batman), a Favorite Movie Actor (Tom Cruise), and a World Favorite Movie Actor (Dustin Hoffman). However, the 32nd People's Choice Awards, broadcast in January 2006, featured categories including Favorite On-Screen Match-Up (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers), Favorite Leading Lady (Reese Witherspoon), and Favorite Tour (U2). In 2008, the People's Choice Awards debuted a new category called Favorite Sci-Fi Show. The nominees for that category included Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who. Stargate Atlantis became the first winner of that award.
