Doom and gloom were Peter Murphy’s trademarks in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when his tomb-deep vocals croaked out the goth-rock anthems of Bauhaus. But while many fans have never looked past the eye shadow, Murphy has developed into a unique and talented experimental artist. Exploring world music and electronic sounds, his solo albums have evolved far past the dirges of his early days and into pioneering musical territory.
It’s impossible to acknowledge Peter Murphy’s talents without giving a little notice to his role in Bauhaus, the seminal post-punk band that took influence from glam, early 20th century art movements, and even ska. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” remains their best-known song, though it can never capture the theatricality of their live shows. Murphy and the rest of the band parted ways in 1983. They formed Love and Rockets; he embarked on a long and winding solo career.
