Phil Lesh Background

Phil Lesh's childhood was filled with music, and he began to play the violin when he was eight years old. He later switched to the trumpet and explored the realm of jazz music, but when he met Jerry Garcia in 1965, he grabbed the bass and decided to join the bluegrass band the Warlocks. Lesh learned how to play the bass guitar on the fly during several of the Warlocks concerts, and soon afterward, the band renamed themselves the Grateful Dead. Lesh quickly became one of the most admired bassists in rock, as he took an experimental approach to the bass that no other musicians had taken before. He is often compared to contemporaries like Paul McCartney and James Jamerson.

The Grateful Dead exploded onto the music scene in the 1960s and 1970s, known for their wild and phenomenal musical improvisation during performances. After several decades of incredible success, the Grateful Dead suffered a career-ending tragedy when its guitarist Jerry Garcia died. Lesh was devastated, and in order to continue the legacy of the Grateful Dead, he formed Phil Lesh and Friends, which is undoubtedly one of the most authentic tribute bands in music history.

Phil Lesh has led an incredibly illustrious career as one of rock and roll's most influential bassists, and now you have the unique opportunity to see him perform live. Whether he and his band are performing classic Grateful Dead songs or are playing some of their own original tunes, you can always count on Phil Lesh and Friends to put on a stellar show.
