Trivia

Although Phil Lesh has become one of the most famous and prolific bass guitar players in the history of rock and roll, the master musician had never even picked up the instrument before Jerry Garcia asked him to be a part of his new rock band. He essentially learned on the job, figuring out his role as he went. Because he didn't know what a traditional bass guitar was supposed to sound like, he didn't play traditionally. He used his background of classical and jazz music to influence his performances, which is what made him a legend. Now, he is considered to be one of the pioneers of a new age for the bass guitar, and continues to come up with new ways to wow audiences with his enormous talent.

About the Artist

Born in Berkeley, California, legendary Grateful Dead bassist and founding member Phil Lesh originally studied violin and trumpet while focusing his attention on classical and jazz music. After dropping out of college after a semester to focus on music, it was his new friend Jerry Garcia who convinced him to take up the bass guitar and the rest, as they say, is history. What began as a meeting at a party began one of the most iconic bands in Rock and Roll history. Lesh was known for learning the bass as he went, which he contributes to his eclectic style of play. After the disbanding of The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh has dedicated his musical career to keeping the legend of band alive by playing their hits and new material alike with friends from across the world of rock music. You won't want to miss his legendary act when it comes to a town near you, so get to Stub Hub today to see one of music's best live shows.

Phil Lesh loves to play music. Since 1998, he has set out to keep the spirit of the Grateful Dead alive through his collaborations with some of the best musicians and perform their music live for all of their fans to experience. The best example of this is Terrapin Crossroads, a restaurant/concert venue he opened in San Rafael, CA. He can be found jamming there with his son on a Sunday afternoon in the sunshine for free for the love of music. When Phil Lesh comes to your town, you will not want to miss the opportunity to see one of the most talented musicians of his time perform legendary Grateful Dead tunes.

Breakthrough Performance

With Jerry Garcia's passing in 1995, a new era began for Phil Lesh as he launched a solo career that would see him collaborate with some of the most talented musicians of the time, including Trey Anastasio of Phish, Susan Tedeschi, Ryan Adams and Joan Osbourne. Although he got his start as a part of Garcia's famous band, it wasn't until he began his solo career that he truly found his voice in the music world. His breakthrough performance came when he began touring with his own band, Phil Lesh and Friends. Fans began to see that Lesh had something to say, and was no longer a background player.

But he never forgets his Grateful Dead roots. When he tours today, he is joined by friends from all over the music landscape as they celebrate the legacy of the famous rock band. Lesh and his star-studded lineup celebrate the past and enhance it with their own signature style. Don't miss your chance to see this amazing musician when he performs in your town.
