Philip Glass Background

Philip Glass was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and discovered his love for music at a very young age thanks to the time he spent in his father's record store, where Glass would listen to records ranging from modern music to Western classical music. He started to learn the flute at preparatory school, and then went on to study at the University of Chicago when he was just 15. Shortly after, he visited Paris for the first time, a trip that forever impacted Glass' life and dreams. He discovered the films of Jean Cocteau and started to embrace the bohemian way of life.

Glass returned to the US and enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music, where he focused on playing the keyboard. While there, he won one of the BMI Student Composer Awards, an extremely prestigious award that highlights the achievements and talents of young composers. In 1964, he received a scholarship to study music in Paris under the composition teacher Nadia Boulanger, a period of time that greatly influenced Glass' musical style for the rest of his career. For over two decades, Glass has been one of the most influential and prominent composers in music. He has composed over 20 operas, eight symphonies, and several more piano concertos, violin concertos, and saxophone concertos.
