Hailing from Georgia, Phillip Phillips started playing music at the age of 14. By teaching Phillips a few chords a day on the guitar, his brother-in-law and friend, Benjamin Neil, was influential in awaking Phillips' interest in music. In 2009, Phillips founded an acoustic band with his sister and brother-in-law and added singing to his routine. After graduating from Lee County High School, he continued to perfect his music with his brother-in-law. They played gigs in college towns and at festivals, and with the support of his family and friends, Phillips took time off from working in his family's pawn shop, and tried out for American Idol in the summer of 2011.

Phillip Phillips auditioned in Savannah, Georgia, for American Idol with the song, Superstition, by Stevie Wonder. The judges then requested him to perform a second number with his guitar, and he performed Thriller by Michael Jackson. Phillips then made it to the both the Hollywood and Las Vegas rounds. On Feb. 23, 2012, Phillips was named as one of the Top 25 semi-finalists, and then voted into the Top 13. As the only contestant who was never at risk for elimination in any week of the American Idol competition, Phillips claimed his victory on the finale of American Idol against Jessica Sanchez after a record-shattering total of 132 million votes were cast.

After winning the American Idol competition, Phillip Phillips embarked on the American Idol LIVE Tour from July to September with the remaining Top 10 finishers of season 11. Phillips was also invited to perform the National Anthem at the 2012 World Series. He additionally collaborated with the PS22 chorus of Staten Island for a fundraising concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and also appeared at the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in December 2012.
