Phish's roots date back to 1983, when four students at the University of Vermont
came together to form a rock band. These students were Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman, Jeff Holdsworth, and Trey Anastasia; the
only member of the original lineup that is not still touring with Phish is Holdsworth, as the rest of the lineup has remained
intact throughout their many years of success. Phish played their very first gig at the cafeteria at their university, and
at this early stage in their career, the band largely played cover songs, many of which were Grateful Dead tunes. It seemed
fitting that this young band performed Grateful Dead tunes, as Grateful Dead is one of the premier jam bands in music history,
and Phish would eventually follow in their footsteps to become a smash success as a jam band. In 1986, Holdsworth left the
band and the official lineup was formed – Trey, Mike, Page, and Jon (Fish), which remains the band's lineup to this
For the next several years, the band worked on their music while attending school, even making mixtapes in their
dorm rooms. Eventually, though, a college campus wouldn't be a big enough stage for this flourishing young band, and by the
late '90s Phish had started to gain significant momentum and recognition amongst the underground rock scene. In 1989, Phish
tried to schedule a show at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, but since the owners had never heard of Phish, they refused
to schedule them in the lineup. Instead of turning around, defeated, the band decided to rent out the entire club so that
they could play their show, which ended up being completely sold out due to the massive caravan of fans that had traveled
to see Phish in concert. This was just a small taste of the success to come—in the following decades, Phish consistently
packed major venues across the country, as their fans are known for traveling long distances to catch Phish perform live.
1991, Phish signed to Elektra Records, and shortly afterward the band embarked on their first national tour performing in
massive amphitheaters. Show after show, Phish performed in front of sold-out crowds, and they continued to become more and
more famous thanks to their wildly devoted and enthusiastic fan base. Phish continued to be one of the hottest live touring
acts in the world throughout the '90s and early 2000s, but in 2004, the band announced their break-up, a devastating blow
to their fans. An estimated 65,000 Phish fans attended their farewell concert in Coventry, Vermont, making it one of the biggest
shows in the history of concerts. Fortunately for all the Phish fans out there, this iconic jam band couldn't stay away from
the stage for long, and in 2008 they decided to reunite for a few shows. This temporary reunion evolved into a long-term reunion,
and to this day Phish is still jamming out on stages across the country. Now you can catch them live in concert by grabbing
