Pittsburgh Penguins Playoff Tickets

Pittsburgh Penguins Playoff tickets

Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a part of the NHL since 1967, and have won three Stanley Cup Championships after appearing in the Finals four times. The Penguins found success early after drafting Michael Briere in 1969. Briere led the Pens to the semi finals when they lost to the defending conference champions the St. Louis Blues. The team's celebration was short-lived however as Briere was involved in a car accident in 1970 that left him in a coma, suffering injuries from which he would never recover, dying the following year. His number 21 jersey has never been worn since. The Penguins suffered some tough seasons in the Seventies before the legendary Mario Lemieux was drafted in 1984. Lemieux would go on to become one of the greatest hockey players of all time and, along with Jaromir Jagr. help guide the Penguins to back to back championships in 1991 and 1992. In 2005 the Penguins struck gold again when they drafted superstar Sydney Crosby who led the Penguins to their third Stanley Cup Championship in 2009 and keeps them at the top of the conference standings. It would be a surprise to no one if the Penguins are able to bring home another Stanley Cup Championship in 2014.

About the Team

The Pittsburgh Penguins have raced off to an insurmountable lead in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference, with a huge late season lead over the second place New York Rangers. As they get ready for a deep playoff run the Penguins will be looking to close out the regular season on a winning note. Superstar center leads the team in points, scoring, and assists and if he can remain healthy he is the type of game changing player that can take over a playoff series as Penguins fans know from experience. The team as a whole has been dominating the NHL all season, currently ranked first in both power play efficiency and penalty killing, as well as fifth in goals per game and eighth in goals against average. If the Penguins can manage to keep their momentum from the regular season going in the playoffs, they could easily be bringing home another Stanley Cup Championship.

The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding the NHL playoffs and fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire NHL. On game day at Consol Energy Center the fans file in and take their seats and that is when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class college hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. Everything is ratcheted up a notch during the NHL playoffs and the further teams advance the more intense the competition becomes. If you thought regular season NHL games were exciting, just wait until you experience an NHL playoff game live and in person.

NHL Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division

The Metropolitan Division is comprised of eight teams: the Carolina Hurricanes, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders, the New York Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Washington Capitals. Many of the teams in the division are among the top franchises in the history of the NHL and four of the eight teams are located in either New York City area or in Pennsylvania. The 2013-2014 season is the first for the Metropolitan Division which was formed due to the realignment of the NHL. The majority of the teams came to the Metropolitan Division from the Atlantic Division, including the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders, the New York Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Meanwhile the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes came from the Southeast Division and the Columbus Blue Jackets joined from the Central Division. It is home to some of the biggest rivalries in the league including that between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals and the one between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. The Metropolitan Division is currently the only division in the NHL without a Canadian Team.

Trivia

Penguins legend Mario Lemieiux is currently one of the owners of the team after helping to rescue the franchise from bankruptcy in December of 2000. Despite their long history of success the Penguins only have three retired numbers, that of Michale Briere and Mario Lemieux. Like every other team in the NHL the Penguins have also retired Wayne Gretzky's number 99.
