History of Heinz Field
For three decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers took on their rivals at Three Rivers Stadium, a facility
purposed to accommodate a variety events. The facility was additionally shared with the Pittsburgh Pirates.Following suit
with other teams in the 1990s, the Steelers set their sights on a bigger and better stadium. Originally, Steelers owner Dan
Rooney, leaned toward renovating the Three Rivers Stadium. His hopes were to turn it into a football-only stadium.After research
proved that renovating the stadium would be just as expensive as building a new one, the Steelers concentrated their efforts
on building a new stadium.Construction started on June 18, 1999. And, it was decided the stadium would be named Heinz Field
to honor the Heinz Company partnership.
Noteworthy Events Hosted at Heinz Field
Heinz Field was christened
with its first event, an 'N Sync concert, on August 18, 2001. The inaugural event was followed by a Steelers pre-season game
against the Detroit Lions.The Steelers claimed victory in the unofficial opening game with a final score of 20-7, as 57,829
fans looked on.The first official football game on record was a match-up between the Pittsburgh Panthers and East Tennessee
State. The Panthers thumped East Tennessee State, winning the game 31-0.
The Steelers were originally slated to kick
off the regular season at Heinz Field against the Cleveland Browns on September 16, 2001 - but because of the September 11
attacks, all NFL games were held off.The Steelers resumed play on October 7, taking on the Cincinnati Bengals. Before the
game, a broadcast of former President George W. Bush aired on the JumboTron. The President's speech was followed by cheers
from fans in the crowd. The Steelers went on to win the game 16-7.
Since its opening in 2001, Heinz Field has also hosted
top-notch entertainers like LeAnn Rimes and Kenny Chesney. And, Pittsburgh's hometown music heroes, Povertyneck Hillbillies
and The Clarks, have also taken the stage several times at the stadium.In 2002, Heinz Field was the site of the finish line
for the always well-attended Pittsburgh Marathon. Three years later, Heinz Field accommodated the Pittsburgh Wine Festival.
More than 2,000 guests were in attendance.In 2011, Pittsburgh was selected as one of six cities to host auditions for the
coveted American Idol television show. Auditions were held at Heinz Field in July.
Also in 2011, Heinz Field hosted
the 2011 NHL Winter Classic. The game matched up the Pittsburgh Penguins with the Washington Capitals. The ceremonial puck
was dropped by area sports heroes Jerome Bettis, Mario Lemieux and Franco Harris. The game turned out to be the highest rated
NHL competition since 1996.Besides sporting events and concerts, Heinz Field was additionally used as the home turf for the
Gotham Rogues in The Dark Knight Rises 2012 film.
