Pizza Underground – 2014 Concert Schedule

Former child star Macaulay Culkin and his Velvet Underground cover band, Pizza Underground, are set to begin their nationwide tour in late January 2014. With tongues firmly held in cheek, Culkin and his band mates will serve up an assortment of pizza-related songs in the style of the late Lou Reed, like "Take a Bite of the Wild Slice," and a medley of other Velvet Underground songs that have been reinterpreted.

About Pizza Underground

Starting in December 2013, the Internet was ablaze with Pizza Underground's bizarre music video, which featured a Velvet Underground cover song medley, complete with pizza masks, a pizza box drum set, and Macaulay Culkin rocking a kazoo. The band's Tumblr page also has a video of Culkin eating a slice of pizza and nothing more – a recreation of a scene filmed by Jørgen Leth in 1981, which featured Andy Warhol eating a hamburger in his film "66 Scenes From America."

Hailing from New York's East Village, the parody band was formed by Deenah Vellmer, Matt Coulbourn and Phoebe Krutz, and also includes the musician Austin Kilham and of course, Macaulay Culkin on kazoo. Although the group initially started out as a joke in February 2012, the band members took the idea and ran with it, and now have an impressive online following.

Pizza Underground's Breakthrough Album

Clocking in at nearly 9 minutes, Pizza Underground's demo was apparently recorded at Macaulay Culkin's home, and is a medley of abridged Velvet Underground tunes that are reworked to incorporate the theme of pizza. With songs like, "Cheese Days," "Pizza Gal," and "Papa John Says," the band sings about the wonders of pizza while remaining true to the dreamy style of the Velvet Underground.

If it weren't for their obvious sense of humor, one could dismiss Pizza Underground as another hipster musical art group who take themselves way too seriously. But fans of satire might find relief in this parody band's bizarre videos and off-the-wall performances.

Pizza Underground Trivia

How did Macaulay Culkin become involved with Pizza Underground?

Macaulay Culkin became involved with Pizza Underground when he was introduced to the group by a mutual friend. Pizza box "player" Deenah Vollmer's boyfriend Toby Goodshank is in an art collective with Culkin, in which they do reinterpretations of pop culture. The group happened to be hanging out with Culkin after an art show, and they started talking about their idea for the cover band. Naturally, Culkin was immediately interested, so they brought him onboard and the rest is history.

Fan Experience

Although Pizza Underground has the perfect ingredients for a viral Internet video, fans will have the opportunity to see how Pizza Underground translates into real life.
