Portland Timbers Schedule

The Portland Timbers are celebrating their 4th season in the MLS, and are having an excellent year and sit close to the top of the Western Conference standings as the 2014 season comes to a close. The Timbers have wasted no time in becoming one of the most popular teams in the league and are looking to make the playoffs for the second straight year, this time hopefully culminating with an MLS Cup championship. Since the World Cup this summer soccer has seen a major surge in popularity in the United States, and although the sport still has a long way to go in this country before it reaches the same degree of popularity it enjoys in the rest of the world this has become one of the most highly attended and exciting MLS seasons yet. There are few teams that have a fan base that can even come close to matching the passion of Real Salt lake fans and being there for a game at Rio Tinto Stadium when Real Salt Lake hits the pitch is an experience you will never forget.

The Portland Timbers are currently engaged in a back and forth battle near the top of the Western Conference standings, sitting just a few points behind FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake as the teams jockey for prime playoff positioning. There are still two regular season home games for the Portland Timbers to get some important wins in hopes of moving up the standings before the playoffs. On October 8th the San Jose Earthquakes come to Providence Park for a big late season game that could both help the Timbers move up the standings and could also give the team a big lift and confidence heading into the postseason. The Earthquakes have had their share of struggles this season so this should be a very winnable game for the team. On October 17th Real Salt Lake comes to town in yet another huge game against a team that is desperately trying to position itself for a top playoff berth. The last game of the season at Providence Park is always one of the most exciting and this one could be one of the most epic games at the stadium in four seasons as fans are anxious to see how the Timbers fare during only their second trip to the MLS playoffs.

Portland Timbers Rivalries

The two oldest rivalries the Portland Timbers have are with the other two Pacific Northwest MLS Teams, the Seattle Sounders and the Vancouver Whitecaps. This is a rivalry that goes back to a time before the MLS even existed and is a huge part of the soccer culture in the area. These rivalry games are among the most intense in the league as the teams compete for the Cascadia Cup. As the Timbers continue to establish themselves as a perennial playoff team they will surely develop new rivalries with the teams they beat and lose to in the playoffs year after year.

Portland Timbers Lake Major League Soccer

The Portland Timbers play in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

The Experience

There are few events as exciting as seeing one top notch soccer team compete at home against another. The players in the MLS have grown up playing the sport that they love and are out there s much to advance the popularity of the sport in the United States. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and gives birth to the most fervent and dedicated fans. One step into Providence Park when the Portland Timbers are playing and you will understand what all of the fuss is about. Unrelenting action, otherworldly footwork, stunning slide tackles, and mind blowing, acrobatic saves by goalkeepers will have you seeing exactly why soccer is referred to as "the beautiful game." You will be chanting and singing along and barely even need to use your seat, as move after move will have you jumping up and cheering for the home team. By the time the referee blows the final whistle you will be anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to attend a Portland Timbers game and will find yourself an MLS and soccer fan for life.

Trivia

For years the Portland Timbers' mascot was Timber Jim, a lumberjack who retired in 2008. Timber Jim has since been replaced by Timber Joey who wears a Portland Jersey and uses a chainsaw to cut a round off of a big log at each game. If the goalkeeper for the Timbers gets a shutout he is then presented with a round from Timber Jim. 2013 was a landmark season for the Timbers as it was the first time they reached the MLS playoffs and made it all the way to the conference finals. The same season Diego Valeri set a Timbers record by scoring ten goals in a single season.
