Preservation Hall Jazz Band Background
Hall Jazz Band took shape over a half century ago driven to keep the traditions of New Orleans jazz alive. Originally from
Philadelphia, Allan and Sandra Jaffe assumed responsibility of what used to bean art gallery and turned itinto a national
gem. "There is no question that Preservation Hall saved New Orleans jazz. When it became an institution in New Orleans, everybody
who went down there went to the hall. They paid a dollar to go hear people like George Lewis or Sweet Emma Barrett and made
them national figures," said the founder of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival George
Wein. What began as anickel-and-dime venture was transformed into a booming operation. And it was the establishment of the
touring bands in 1963 that helped raise the Preservation Hall's profile.
A revolving lineup over the years has kept
audiences enchanted all over the world - from Moscow to Hollywood. Fan favorites included Sweet Emma Barrett, Billie and DeDe
Pierce, George Lewis, Willie Humphrey and Kid Thomas Valentine. As the decades wore on, many of the jazz legends had passed
away, making way for a new crop of younger musicians to carry on the tradition.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has
released a string of albums over the years, including 2010's Preservation: An Album to Benefit the Preservation Hall Music
Outreach Program, which features guest artists like The Del McCoury Band, Dr. John, Tom Waits, Pete Seeger and more. Today,
the Preservation Hall Jazz Band still maintain its status as road warriors, making the rounds at big-name festivals like Coachella.
