THE BIZ: OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORKING AND LOVE THE TICKET SCALPER
Extracted from ESPN The Magazine, May 20, 2008 -- The traditional thinking is that ticket scalping is bad for the home team...But that traditional thinking is wrong...By allowing free and open ticket resale, the Cubs have increased the value of the ticket resale option, which in turn leads to an increase in the value of the ticket when they put it up for sale in the pre-season. [Think of that as the Cubs ticket IPO.]
INTERNET PUTS A SUGARCOAT ON SCALPING
Extracted from New York Times, Jan 19, 2008 -- Once upon a time, you could argue that people who bought scalped tickets might wind up buying counterfeit tickets - or that scalpers standing outside an arena created a public nuisance. But you can't make those arguments anymore: the rise of the online scalpers like StubHub has eliminated those worries. They've also done two other things: they've made it plain that anti-scalping laws are unenforceable. And they've exposed the absurdity of trying to stamp out something that is so powerfully driven by the laws of supply and demand.
