About Protest the Hero

Protest the Hero would be a music project that gradually materialized into existence, starting first in the early days of 2000s under the moniker Happy Go Lucky. The group would record various demo tapes throughout 2001, eventually changing their name to Protest the Hero, a moniker that would stick as the band grew to become one of the biggest metal acts to ever grace North America. The newly renamed band would release their first EP, a two track short, which would be the tentative beginnings to the Protest the Hero phenomenon that would soon spread like wildfire across the Canadian countryside. Despite the band's young age (with some of their writing and recording dating back to when the band members were just thirteen years old), the group would cap off their high school graduation with a bang in their first ever national tour, hitting every corner of Canada as part of a youth piloted Rock the Vote tour that took them from Ontario to far off Nova Scotia.

By 2004, the band would collapse under the pressure of popular demand and release their debut album, which would gain ground in music circles across the metal genre and establish Protest the Hero as one of the most promising up and coming metal bands of the decade. Three years later fans and critics alike would not be disappointed as they released their sophomore follow up, showcasing and ever maturing sound that pushed the limits of the metal genre, mixing an unquenchable thirst for technical perfection with non stop metal riffs that produced one of the greatest underground metal albums of the year. The band would hit the tour road hard, promoting their current work for two years before finally dipping bag into the studio for their most polished work to date. The album, released in 2010, would mark a new chapter in Protest the Hero's history that continue to today. Besides a more progressive and more analytical sound, by 2013 the band would eschew record labels in favor of crowd sourcing funding for their music, moving to concentrate creative and financial control of their music back into their own hands.

Despite constantly ramped up mainstream success, the band has also dealt with the amicable departure of multiple band members, including founding member Moe Carlson as well as bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi. Despite these personnel setbacks Protest the Hero has consistently pushed the envelope when it comes to the Metal genre, with every new release captivating new listeners while equally entrancing diehard fans that have been with the band for more than a decade. The band is showing no signs of slowing down as they continue to approach the summit of their musical greatness, fixtures and pioneers of the metal genre that continue to redefine the meta landscape in their own image.

Previous Hits

The band's big commercial break would be 2008's Fortress, a metal masterpiece that would be the first time the band would appear on major charts. Despite being their first time, the band would have no problem climbing to the top as the hit the #1 position on the Canadian charts, along with a showing on the US Billboard 200 and #10 and #14 showing on the US Indie and US Hard Rock lists. Fortress would benefit from the production of veteran Julius Butty, and gain across the board near perfect scores including four and a half stars from Punknews and Sputnikmusic, an A rating from the A.V. Club and four star ratings from AllMusic, Now, and Alternative Press. The album is Protest the Hero's definitive commercial breakout, and remains a crowd favorite album that is core to the band's discography. It featured four mega hit singles, including "Spoils", "Palms Read", "Bloodmeat" and "Sequoia Throne".

Trivia

Even before commercial success, the band was tapped as a major up and comer when it beat out Alexisonfire for the Favourite Metal Group award at the Canadian Independent Music Awards. Ten years later the band would pick up another major award at the 2014 Juno Awards, this time for best Metal Album of the Year.
