Who is the court at Dunkin' Donuts Center, the home court of the Providence College Friars, named after?

The answer is Dave Gavitt, a pivotal figure in Providence and Big East basketball history. Gavitt helped form the Big East Conference and became its first commissioner in 1979, holding the post until 1990. Dave Gavitt lived and breathed basketball, also holding the role as CEO of the Boston Celtics and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 – the first Rhode Island native to be enshrined.

The History

Though Providence College is a small school of less than 4,000 students, it has enjoyed an extremely rich NCAA Men's Basketball history and tradition. Legendary Hall of Fame coaches Lenny Wilkens and John Thompson are proud alumni. Other former players include Florida coach Billy Donovan and former All-Stars Otis Thorpe and Jimmy Walker. The Friars have made two Final Four appearances, an incredible feat for a small school, tucked away in New England. The history of this program is far from written, with young talent and an incredibly popular coach working hard to bring the Friars back to the forefront of college basketball.
