James Keenan, born James Herbert Keenan, is a singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, winemaker and actor. Keenan went
into the Army in the 1980s, and in an interview with Patton Oswald, said that after seeing Bill Murray in Stripes, he decided
to enlist, hoping to have the G.I. bill fund his dream of attending art school. He did go on to the Kendall College of Art
and Design, and after moving out to L.A. and holding various jobs, he and some other musicians formed the band, Tool. The
Grammy Award-winning band has experienced a lot of success. Puscifer is Keenan's pseudonym for his solo work that he has described
as, "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, a space with no clear or discernible goals." It is hard to classify
Keenan, or Puscifer for that matter; labeled everything from alternative rock, post-industrial, trip hop, experimental and
ambient, Puscifer has been on the scene since 2003. Keenan is the only permanent member, and he performs with a revolving
lineup of talented artists. In 2009, Keenan debuted Puscifer with shows in Las Vegas as well as various engagements in the
Southwest. In a November 2009 interview, Keenan stated: "Efforts to confine our beloved enigma to the Southwestern United
States have been thwarted. We are compelled beyond all reason to bring the noise Eastward and share our special sauce. Although
authorities suggest you be prepared for any and all possibilities, we simply suggest you arrive happy and hungry." Puscifer
performed at Coachella in 2013, and that year also saw Puscifer playing their first dates outside of North America, taking
the stage in Australia as well as Lollapalooza Brazil and Lollapalooza Chile.
has released two studio albums to date. "V" is for Vagina was released on October 30, 2007, and Conditions of My Parole, arrived
in October 2011. Puscifer has four remix albums: "V" is for Viagra. The Remixes (2008); "D" is for Dubby - The Lustmord Dub
Mixes (2008); Sound into Blood into Wine (2010); and All Re-Mixed Up (2013). Puscifer also has two live albums, Puscifer's
8-Ball Bonds - The Berger Barnes Live in Phoenix (2013) and What Is... (2013).
James Keenan adopted the name, Puscifer, after a fictional band he fronted in an appearance on the HBO comedy series, Mr.
Show in 1995. Everyone needs some type of release and to Keenan, Puscifer was it. Keenan is also very proud of the Puscifer
clothing line with clothing items produced in limited numbers. In addition to the clothing line, Keenan also has a brand of
locally roasted coffee, art and an ever-changing list of limited edition collectibles. He additionally has a winery in Arizona,
overseeing all the various jobs that go along with the endeavor. Keenan has a Cabernet Sauvignon, which he named after his
late mother, Nagual del Judith.
Keenan has also used his voice on numerous occasions to support charitable causes. He
performed at a 1997 benefit concert for RAINN (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), organized by Tori Amos. He
is also a performer for Axis of Justice, a non-profit organization that brings musicians, fans of music and grassroots political
organizations together to fight for social justice.
Keenan is featured on vocals on two tracks that the Axis of Justice
released in 2004. Puscifer recently released What Is..., a full-length concert film-meets-mockumentary that showcases Puscifer's
unique live performances, which are known for their skillfully presented variety show atmosphere.
Maynard James Keenan is turning 50 this year and says, "Making it to the half-century mark can be equal
parts daunting and relieving. I figured I would remove the sting of officially being referred to as 'gramps' by throwing a
party and outlasting all my rude friends." Make sure to get yourself to the Greek this May, and be prepared for a fun-filled
musical treat. With a steady list of surprise guest appearances, it is sure to be a perfect way to start the summer season
off. Great music, fun times; it just doesn't get any better than this.
