Rachael Yamagata developed a love for music very early in life, learning the piano as a child. When she attended college in Chicago, she began to perform with a funk band called "Bumpus". After she earned her bearings with Bumpus, she set off on her own to pursue her own musical destiny. She was quickly signed to Arista's Private Music and released her first album, "Happenstance", in 2004.
