About Ralph Stanley

A product of the great state of Virginia, Ralph would not find his passion for music until he was almost a man grown. His first forays into music came when his family raised enough money to get him a banjo, which would instantly captivate him and define both his life and his musical style for decades to come. A member of the greatest generation, Ralph dutifully performed military service before eventually returning back home and pondering what his next big move would be. With too many options to choose from, Ralph decided to take an old country gamble on his banjo, grabbed his musician brother and tried to make it big playing music all across Virginia.

Living off of local performances and primarily performing covers, the brothers began writing their own material and were eventually scouted by music label giant Columbia Records. They would make measured success and carve themselves out a position as professional musicians, eventually switching to King Records and taking their music in their own unique direction. With a few additions, Ralph and his brother eventually went by the moniker the Clinch Mountain Boys, a name that would stick for several decades.

1966 would be a life defining year for Ralph as he lost his brother to a fatal disease and had to make tough choices about the future of his music career. Ralph had spent his entire musical career alongside his brother, but with the encouragement of his record label and widespread support from his fans, Ralph decided to honor his brothers memory and continue to put out down home country music that would be enjoyed the world over.

After receiving an honorary Doctorate of Music in the mid 70s, Ralph picked up the moniker of Dr. Ralph Stanley, and had become a bluegrass phenomenon the world over. WIth multiple recognitions and accolades from some of the biggest institutions in music, including induction into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor. With life experience predating World War II and a career in music spanning over five decades, Dr. Ralph Stanley recently put out his personal autobiography, chronicling his life experiences from his early days as a local Virginian performer to his exploits today as one of the most integral performers in the bluegrass genre. With constant performances still going strong today, the story of Dr. Ralph Stanley is definitely not over yet.

Previous Hits

With decades of moving music on the record, it's hard to pinpoint just one album or release that captures the quintessential Ralph Stanley. His self titled 2002 release, Ralph Stanley, is his most critically successful in recent years, garnering a four star rating from The Guardian and popping up all over the Billboard charts - including #3 on the Bluegrass charts and #5 on the Heat. The album would be carried by some of his most pivotal works yet, including "Lift Him Up, That's All", "Look on and Cry", and "Calling You". Three years later would see Shine On drop, a product of Ralph and Rebel Records. Shine On would feature Ralph Stanley II as a producer, and be a huge success for the Stanley family with the hits "This Little Light of Mine" and "Palms of Victory", which would culminate in a Dove Award nomination for Bluegrass Album of the Year.
