Ramon Ayala Background

Ramon Ayala was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and was quickly exposed to regional music thanks to his father, an acclaimed local musician. When he was just six years old, Ramon picked up the accordion, the instrument which he has since become famous for playing expertly. Ramon's parents encouraged his love for music, and he soon started performing at small local venues and public spaces, quickly discovering his powerful passion for performing. He joined several bands as a teenager, including groups called Los Jilgueros de Marin and Los Pavorreales, but it wasn't until the early 1960s that he really made his mark on the music world.

As a teenager, Ayala joined forces with the bajo sexto guitarist and singer Cornelio Reyna to form a group called Los Relampagos del Norte, and together, the aspiring musicians practically invented the modern form of conjunto music. The songs that the duo produced have become classics all over Latin America, and have since been covered by numerous artists all over the world. Together, Ayala and Reyna recorded over 20 albums, all of which spurred numerous smash hits. The duo parted ways in the early 1970s, and Ayala went on to experiment in other bands. Ayala once again changed the landscape of Latin American music when he met Eliseo Robles, as Ayala and Robles started to produce music together that would soon become the standard of norteno music.

Throughout his incredibly prolific and groundbreaking career, Ramon Ayala has earned numerous awards and accolades. He has won several Grammy Awards, both Latin and American, and has also received high praise from music critics all over the world.
