Founded in the Columbus, Ohio, area, Rascal Flatts drew its name from a renowned Oklahoma landmark. Band members, Gary Levox and Jay DeMarcus are second cousins with music coarsing through their family veins. DeMarcus' brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a fellow country music artist. It was DeMarcus who first trekked to Nashville in 1992, cutting his first record deal as a band member of East to West, a Christian group. In 1997, he persuaded his cousin, Levox, to leave behind his job and pursue his dreams as well. DeMarcus soon joined Chely Wright's band, which led him to the introduction of Joe Don Rooney, who now plays lead guitar for Rascal Flatts. Since the group members fell into place, Rascal Flatts has formed a tight-knit union both musically and personally that has culminated into their extreme success.
