Red Bull Air Race History

The Red Bull A are in the stir Race World Championships were first held in 2003 and were an immediate hit. The events are held at various locations throughout the world and feature qualifying races on the first day with knock out round competition on the second day. The races reward not only speed, but precision, and skill and feature many of the best pilots in the world. The idea for the races came when people in the Red Bull Sports department decided they wanted to bring a new and exciting sport to the world that would live up to the brand's reputation. In 2011 the Red Bull Air Race World Championships were canceled as they tried to come up with new safety measures and to restructure the contest. The Red Bull Air Races were finally held again starting in 2014 much to the delight of aviation fans all over the world who had been missing one of their favorite competitions.

The Pilots

The pilots participating in the Red Bull Air Race World Championships are among the best stunt pilots found in the world and they are always eager to put on an unforgettable show for their fans. There is a tremendous amount of pride among these pilots and none of them are going to be satisfied with a second place finish. Each pilot must participate in two training days before the qualifying races of the event. Twelve pilots then compete against one another with the fastest 8 moving on to the Super 8. The Super 8 round determines who will compete in the Final 4 round which decides the winner. The order in which the pilots race is decided based on the final standings of the previous year with the top pilot flying first.


After taking off the 2011, 2012, and 2013 season, the Red Bull Air Race World Championships returned to action on February 28, 2014 when a race was held in Abu Dhabi. Since then there have been several other Red Bull Air Race World Championships held and the event is as popular as ever.
