The band was formed in 1967 by Neal Doughty and dorm mate Alan Gratzer, who were students together at the University of Illinois. They decided to jam together with the hope of making some money playing at local campus bars. They got their name from a popular truck at the time, and their goals quickly changed when they were discovered by a record executive at Epic Records, who signed them to a contract. Over the next 25 years, they released 16 studio albums, and had 18 singles hit the charts. The band still tours often, and their shows are always worth attending.
