About the Artist

Haitian rapper Rick Ross was born William Roberts and raised in Carol City, Florida. He grew up surrounded by inspirations of rap culture where artists like Tupac Shakur, B.I.G. and Notorious took the nation by storm with their hits. During the 1990s, Ross formed a rap group coined Carol City Cartel that eventually led him to inking a deal with Suave House Records that was additionally home of 8Ball & MJG. It was, however, a nice surprise when Slip-n-Slide Records additionally took notice of his talent and signed him on immediately. With the new recording house, Ross networked with hip-hop heavyweights like Trina and Trick Daddy. He was also often included as a guest on mixtapes and albums. Additionally, Ross garnered a promotion when he was often brought along for Trick Daddy's concerts. But it wasn't until 2006 that Ross became a solo artist, and has been burning up the charts ever since!

Rick Ross' career has been defined by releases of one exemplary album after another, including his sophomore album, Trilla. This album was coined after his idol, Michael Jackson's all-time classic album, Thriller. Trilla contained top-drawer artists like R. Kelly, Jay-Z, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, Young Jeezy, Flo Rida, Trick Daddy, Nelly, Akon, T-Pain and more, with production from, The Runners, DJ Toomp, J-Rock, J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, Drumma Boy and J.R. Rotem, among others. His third studio album opened up at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 158,000 copies in its first week.

Breakthrough Performance

Rick Ross struck out on his own in 2006, penning the song, Hustlin' that remarkably ignited a bidding war between record executives, starting from P. Diddy's Bad Boy Records to Irv Gotti's The Inc. It was Jay-Z who cemented the deal with Ross, taking Slip-n-Slide under a contract with his Def Jam label. When it came out in March 2006, Hustlin' instantly became a hit, landing at No. 11 on U.S. Hot R'nB/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Eventually, the single was certified Gold by RIAA in May 2006 and Ross sold millions of its ringtones. Ross debuted his initial album, Port of Miami, which, despite only generating one single, managed to rank at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. It sold over 187,000 copies in its first week on the shelves!
