Robert Plant, born Robert Anthony Plant on 20 August 1948 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, grew up in England's West Midlands with an early hunger for American blues and rock and roll. He left home at 16 to sing with a series of local blues bands, absorbing the music of Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and Skip James, and played alongside drummer John Bonham in a group called Band of Joy. In 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page recruited Plant to front a rebuilt version of The Yardbirds. That lineup soon renamed itself Led Zeppelin, a band that went on to international success across the 1970s.
Plant served as Led Zeppelin's lead singer and lyricist from 1968 until the band's break-up in 1980, fronting era-defining albums that included Led Zeppelin II, the untitled fourth record known as Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti. With his long blond hair, bare-chested swagger, and kinetic stage presence, he became the template for the charismatic hard rock frontman, a 1970s peer of Mick Jagger and Roger Daltrey. Encyclopaedia Britannica credits him with creating the vocal sound that has defined much of hard rock and heavy metal singing, a high, raw, emotionally charged style built on the expressive palette of blues singers such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. His lyrics reached into Norse and Welsh mythology and the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, and "Stairway to Heaven," whose words he wrote spontaneously at Headley Grange in 1970, topped polls as the greatest song of all time even though it was never released as a single. The band earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
After the band ended, Plant rebuilt his career on curiosity rather than nostalgia. His first two solo albums, Pictures at Eleven (1982) and The Principle of Moments (1983), each reached the top ten of the Billboard 200, and Now and Zen (1988) earned a triple Platinum certification as his biggest-selling solo record. He scored a 1984 top-ten single with The Honeydrippers' cover of "Sea of Love," rejoined Jimmy Page for two albums as Page and Plant, and spent the following decades exploring blues, folk, and world music with Strange Sensation, a revived Band of Joy, and the Sensational Space Shifters. His collaboration with bluegrass vocalist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2009, and the pair reunited for Raise the Roof in 2021. In 2019 he formed the acoustic group Saving Grace, which released its first studio album in 2025.
