Robert Randolph And The Family Band Background

Hailing from Orange, New Jersey, Robert Randolph first took up the pedal steel guitar in his teens. As a regular at the House of God Church, Randolph was privy to a tradition that dates back to the 30s. The African-American Pentecostal churchused steel guitarsas part of the church services. By keeping a close eye on the steel players during regular services, Randolph was able to learn to play.

At Florida'sSacred Steel Convention held in 2000, Jim Markel caught a glimpse of Randolph's talent. Markel, along with his friend, Gary Waldman, became managers for Randolph. It didn't take long to raise Randolph's profile after a talent buyer for the famous Bowery Ballroom enlisted him as the opener for the popular North Mississippi Allstars. He soon advanced to playing the Beacon Theater, where he shared the stage with Medeski, Martin & Wood. Impressed by Randolph's virtuosity, Medeski invited him to contribute his talents to a gospel/blues effort, The Word. The album arrived in the late summer of 2001, highly praised by critics.

Along with his cousins, Marcus Randolph and Danyell Morgan, as well as John Ginty, Randolph serves as the head of the Family Band. The band started out by opening for a number of different groups like Soulive, the Derek Trucks Band and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. He and his band graduated to the marquee within just a couple of months.

In 2001, Robert Randolph and The Family Band issued Live at the Wetlands. Their first studio effort was Unclassified, which came out two years later. We Walk This Road dropped next in 2010 and included contributions from artists like Doyle Bramhall II, Ben Harper and Leon Russell. Their latest effort is Lickety Split, featuring Carlos Santana and Trombone Shorty.
