Robin Thicke Background

Hailing from L. A., Robin Thicke is a self-taught pianist, who by the age of 16 was penning and producing his own tunes for renowned artists like Brian McKnight, Brandy and Color Me Badd.

In an interview Thicke said, "At 7 years old, I was listening to Michael Jackson and Prince; Van Halen and Poison. I didn't relate to the loud and long hair as much as I did the soulfulness."

By the time he turned 21, he had lent his creativity to more than 20 gold and platinum albums, including those of Marc Anthony, Pink, Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson, among others.

A year later Thicke inked a deal with Jimmy Iovine and Interscope Records. It didn't take long for him to meet Andre Harrell, a mentor to stars like Sean "Puffy" Combs and Mary J. Blige, as well as the former CEO of Uptown Records.Harrell soon became Thicke's mentor as well.

Thicke's highly praised first album, A Beautiful World, arrived in 2003, under the name "Thicke." He continued to dedicate his time and energy to writing and producing tunes for The Carter 2 (Lil' Wayne); the Grammy-winning album Confessions (Usher); and Mary J. Blige.

Thicke's successful sophomore release, The Evolution Of Robin Thicke (2006), generated hits like "Lost Without U." The tune became the No. 1 most played song in Urban Adult Contemporary BDS and landed at the top of four Billboard charts at the same time. Thicke cemented his status as one of the most revered singer/songwriters in the R&B and soul genres on the music scene today.

A year later Thicke was on the road with Beyonce and made two appearances on the Oprah show.

The award-winning, multi-platinum megastar stepped back into the spotlight in 2008 with Something Else. The album served as a contemporary homage to the 70's era filled with remarkable pop and soul hits that inspired Thicke's career. Lauded by critics as one of the greatest soul albums to eclipse the music scene in years, this '70s-tinged album addressed topics of love, poverty and racism in hits like "The Sweetest Love," "Magic," and "Dreamworld." The title for the album is certainly fitting - the effort is truly 'something else.' It made its way to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 when it first arrived, and it is currently his highest charting album to this very day. He secured another Top 10 hit track with "Magic," which claimed the No. 2 spot on the urban charts. And his song, "Tie My Hands," resonated with Lil' Wayne so much that he included it on his record-shattering album, The Carter 3. Thicke and Lil' Wayne collaborated on the song at the Grammy Awards ceremony in 2009, and not long after, Thicke set out on a tour with Mary J. Blige.

By the close of 2009, Thicke issued the album, Sex Therapy. The album conveyed an erotic fantasy world, while still addressing the issues of betrayal, loneliness and seduction. Critics billed the title track, "Sex Therapy," as "the sexiest song of the year." It forged ahead to the No. 1 spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and also claimed an ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Award.

In December of 2011, Thicke's fifth studio album dropped. Love After War featured the title single, "Love After War," which shot to No. 1 on Urban AC and remained at the top for two weeks. Critics once again applauded Thicke's efforts, with Entertainment Weekly coining the album as "ever-seductive." And the Associated Press dubbing the album as a "must buy." Other songs off the album include "An Angel on Each Arm," "Never Give Up," "Cloud 9," "Tears On My Tuxedo" and "Pretty Lil' Heart."

Thicke continued to shine in the public eye, participating in ABC's reality singing series, Duets in 2012.
