Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Background

The Rocky Mountain Folk Festival began over two decades ago. What is billed as the "summit on the song," the festival was originally held at Estes Park and relocated to the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons in 1994.

The story of the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival dates back to 1990 when Steve Szymanski and Craig Ferguson gave wings to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, making that year the festival's hallmark year - the most successful year of its history. Following its success, Ferguson said, "You get all geared up and you have this team together and you figure we should do something else." His simple idea for a second festival evolved into the launch of the debut event held in 1991 at Stanley Park. "We thought we had found nirvana up there," said Szymanski. The inaugural event included a beautiful mountainous backdrop along with an inviting venue. Almost 1,000 guests were drawn to the little town located outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. But sometimes Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate with festival agendas. Faced with severe storms almost yearly, festival organizers set their sights on scouting out new grounds. Lyons was selected as the new site and the moniker Planet Bluegrass surfaced around the same time. According to the festival's website, the name was influenced by a live album from Telluride that included a background image of planet Earth. Ferguson said the name came about unintentionally. "We didn't really plan that as our name. We just started answering the phone that way. It was a big enough umbrella for all that we wanted to do," he said.

Over the years the festival has bloomed, crafting its very own identity, spirit and culture while staying true to what the founders of the festival refer to as their "initial vision for spending a glorious Colorado summer weekend celebrating stories and songs - from around the musical and geographic world."
