The History

Rodeo Austin's storied history of preserving western heritage started in 1938. What started as a one-day calf show has evolved into a year-long fundraising campaign for college scholarships with the rodeo capping off the event as the grand finale. Sixteen days of cattle, concerts, cowboys and carnival fun has contributed to bringing in millions of dollars in funds for Texas youth in the form of scholarships and other projects.

Having recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, Rodeo Austin dates back to 1938 when Austin Chamber of Commerce members and the Travis County Agricultural Extension Service began initial talks about the event. Austin's first Baby Beef Show was held in early March of 1940. In the shadows of the Capitol, men and boys proudly led their groomed calves to West 11th Street and Congress Avenue. The event was initially used as a practical vehicle to promote beef production. Calf scrambles became a part of the event in 1949, and then the first junior rodeo comprised of riding, roping and other competitive contests, arrived in 1951. Actor and country music singer Tex Ritter played at the 1952 event, with midway attractions, agricultural showcases and carnival rides added along the way.

By the time the 1980s rolled in, it was clear to Rodeo Austin organizers, that they needed to find a much larger home to accommodate the event. The Travis County Expo became the host.

Today, despite the county's decrease in agricultural land, attendance continues to spike with the live entertainment, cowboy breakfast, a dressy auction, gala, carnival and barbecue cook-off serving as the big attractions. So hike on your cowboy boots and your rodeo digs, and head to Rodeo Austin 2014! All you need to do is pick up your tickets now right here through StubHub!
