Rodrigo y Gabriela Background
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero were born and raised in Mexico City, where they were constantly surrounded by flamenco,
jazz, and rock. While they were heavily influenced by these sounds, it was heavy rock music by bands like Metallica that truly
inspired the two young musicians. Rodrigo and Gabriela met at the House of Culture in Mexico City when they were teenagers,
and immediately discovered a connection. Sanchez and his brother formed a heavy metal band in the early 1990s that they called
Tierra Acid, or Acid Land. Gabriela joined the group a couple of years later, and for a while it looked like the band might
secure a record deal. This fleeting chance of hope disintegrated, however, and Rodrigo y Gabriela decided to get out of Mexico
City and start a new adventure in Ixtapa, a resort town in Mexico that often attracts international tourists.
the duo performed at beach bars and spent many hours a day practicing, but eventually became exhausted with the limited opportunities
in the Mexican music scene. The duo packed up and moved to Dublin, where they busked on crowded streets and performed in pubs.
Rodrigo y Gabriela became incredibly popular in Ireland, as both tourists and locals loved their unique and eclectic sound.
They finally received their big break when they opened for Damien Rice and David Gray, and by 2002, their self-titled album
had earned the number one spot on the Irish Albums Chart, even beating out major bands like the Arctic Monkeys and Johnny
Cash. Since this big breakthrough, Rodrigo y Gabriela have rocked the music scene with their fun and diverse sound, and have
become one of the best known music acts to come out of Mexico in recent years. Now you have the chance to see these internationally
