Roger McGuinn Background

Roger McGuinn was born James Joseph McGuinn in Chicago. McGuinn gigged around the Windy City with the Limelighters before signing on as a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio in 1960. Discouraged by his restricted role in the group, he exited to participate in Bobby Darin's band. Following appearances on sessions for Judy Collins, Tom & Jerry and Hoyt Axton, McGuinn performed on his own accord, playing the L.A. area. Soon after, he established Jet Set with Gene Clark and David Crosby. Their debut single under the name of Beefeaters flopped so the group added on Chris Hillman (bassist) and enlisted Michael Clarke (drummer) and reinvented themselves as the Byrds. The group set out to mash the folk influences of Bob Dylan with the pop sounds that characterized the British Invasion. The Byrds experienced overnight success but as with many groups, was afflicted with internal disagreements about the group's creative direction. After the release of Sweetheart of the Rodeo (1968), McGuinn was the sole founding father left standing. But, the Byrds forged ahead, diving deeper into roots and country music before disbanding in early 1973. In that same year, McGuinn released his eponymous first effort. The releases of Peace on You (1974) and Roger McGuinn & His Band (1975) came before a spell with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, which helped boost McGuinn's status on the music scene. Cardiff Rose (1976) was celebrated as his greatest solo project to date. The following year, McGuinn hooked back up with Chris Hillman and Gene Clark. Their reunion culminated into the LP, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman (1979). The LP netted "Don't You Write Her Off," which scored in the Top 40. Halfway through cutting the follow-up, City (1980), Clark left, and the album was issued under the name Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman Featuring Gene Clark. McGuinn/Hillman was released in 1981, their final effort together. During the rest of the decade, McGuinn spent time giving solo concerts minus a recording contract.

These days, McGuinn continues to tour the planet and delivers performances in theaters as a One Man Show.
