Rogers Cup Montreal History

The Rogers Cup, also known as the Canadian Open, is a professional tennis tournament played annually in Canada, rotating between the cities of Toronto and Montreal on an every-other-year rotation. The tournament is a Masters 1000 even on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the top tennis league in the world. The tournament features both men and women competing separately for the right to hoist the trophies as the event's winners. The Canadian Open dates back to 1891, when the men first took to the court to compete; the women joined in the following year. It is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, with only Wimbledon and the US Open dating back further. Originally known as the Canadian National Championships, this event has seen some of the best tennis players in history step on the court over the years, and fans know that they'll find some incredible tennis talent whenever they head out to either of the locations. After decades of being known as the Canadian Championships, the event was renamed the Canadian Open in 1968. In 1997 it was renamed de Maurier Open, a name the tournament held until 2000, when it became the Canada Masters. Since 2005 this event has been known as the Rogers Masters or the Rogers Cup. Each year the top tennis pros in the world descend on either Montreal or Toronto to compete and add to their already rich history that this tournament boasts.
