Elton J. Rynearson was one of Eastern Michigan University’s greatest football coaches, serving for 26 seasons, and leading his teams to a final record of 114-58-15. In one of his best periods, from 1925 to 1930, his teams won 40 games, tied two and lost four. The stadium was dedicated to him in October of 1969, costing $1,400,000 at the time of its construction.

Over time, Rynearson Stadium has changed a bit, always for the better. The field was originally natural grass, with StadiaTurf being installed in 1991. In 1998, the field got another face lift when AstroTurf was installed.
