Holbrook and his wife Ruby got their start on the stage where they would perform mock interviews featuring famous people in history, one of which was Twain. Holbrook later revised the concept into a one-man show in the 1950s and first performed the production at the Lock Haven State Teachers College in Pennsylvania in 1954.
