Safeco Field History
Located just off downtown Seattle on the banks of the Puget Sound, Safeco Field is one of
the crowning jewels of Major League ballparks. Opening in 1999, Safeco Field is one of a handful of newer parks that has set
the standard for how baseball's parks are being built, with state of the art technology and a retro-modern feel that harkens
back to the ballparks of old, but with all of the modern amenities. The Seattle Mariners had played their home games in the
Kingdome, the aging dome that was no longer attracting fans or big name free agents. The city feared that the Mariners would
attempt to relocate if a new facility was not built. The county and team ownership made the plans for a new stadium close
to the site of the Kingdome and the result is the gorgeous Safeco Field. Built with a state of the art retractable roof in
case of any Seattle showers, Safeco Field is truly a site to behold, a must see on any baseball fans list of the best ballparks
in the country. The area around the stadium, known as SoDo, has been bolstered by the addition of CenturyLink Field, home
of the Seattle Seahawks, in 2002. Fans are now treated to not only the great baseball games, but first class food and entertainment
before and after the game.
Safeco Field Events Hosted
Safeco Field is a baseball specific stadium that
was built in 1999 to be the home of the Seattle Mariners of the American League. The beautiful stadium surely played a hand
in the Mariner's epic 2001 season, when they tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs with a record 116 regular season wins. Though they
lost to the New York Yankees in the 2001 ALCS, the Mariners season, which featured stars like AL MVP Ichiro Suzuki, Edgar
Martinez and Mike Cameron, 2001 is a season that Mariners fans will never forget. Safeco Field was also the site of the 2001
Major League All Star Game, where Seattle was able to show off their incredible new stadium to the rest of the world. Besides
Mariners baseball, Safeco Field has also hosted many wonderful events like Pac-12 baseball games and Wrestlemania, and concerts
from stars like Paul McCartney and The Beach Boys.
