Padres Update – Week of July 4

Though baseball goes on, it will be with heavy hearts that the Padres head deeper into the regular season following the untimely death of legendary Padres' outfielder Tony Gwynn. The idea of a legend can be occasionally overused, but certainly not in the case of Gwynn, who made a name for himself as one of the greatest pure hitters in the history of Major League Baseball, though those who knew him would also point out that he was as kind and down to Earth as he was dynamic in the batter's box. With Gwynn's passing, baseball fans all over the country and world have been looking back at his career, and many have marveled at just how good Gwynn actually was.

Originally a highly touted basketball point guard recruited by San Diego State, Gwynn would end up sticking with baseball – a decision that ended up being a wise one. Gwynn would end up winning the batting title a ridiculous eight different times, culminating in a.394 year in the strike-shortened 1994 season. Of course, Gwynn had even better seasons than 1994, as hit a league-best.372 with a career high 17 homers and 119 RBIs in 1997. Gwynn would actually hit above.350 seven different times throughout his brilliant career, and many said that he could have been a home run hitter as well if he chose to focus on power.

Gwynn was so good with the bat, actually, that many don't realize how good he was in right field. Winner of five different Gold Gloves, Gwynn was also one of the best defensive outfielders in the game early in his career, showing that he was an all-around great athlete who could do it all on the baseball field. As a prominent Padre who became a bona fide legend in the San Diego area, Gwynn's memory burns on and the Padres will be playing the rest of 2014 with heavy hearts.

2014 San Diego Padres Schedule

If you're looking for a little action in San Diego, you're definitely in the right spot, as the Padres have some big-time talent and hopes of making a big move up the N.L. West standings this season. Petco Park is a great place to take in a game, and the Padres are going to host a number of top teams there in 2014. You can be there to witness the Padres play some of their divisional rivals this season when you head out to the stadium for a game. Once you're there at Petco watching the Padres take on a talented team, you'll definitely be glad that you're not sitting anywhere else, as this is a game that springs to a completely different level when you get a chance to see it first-hand. But even though home games are obviously a must, it's a different thing to see the team on the road and you'll be in for a completely different type of thrill.

Of course, it all starts with being able to take down their divisional foes, and the Padres always look to take their game up a notch when Los Angeles Dodgers come into the Petco Park. The Dodgers were able to win the National League West championship last season thanks to their incredible collection of talent. The Dodgers are going to be a tough team to take down this season, but the Padres know that any team can be beaten. A few big wins against the Dodgers could go a long way into sparking a fire in this scrappy Padres team that could lead to a winning season in San Diego.

The San Francisco Giants might have had a down year in 2013, but don't expect that to happen again. With one of the best pitching staffs in the game, the Giants are always tough to defeat, and everyone in the National League West know that all too well. The Giants are going to head into Petco Park a multitude of times this season, and those should be some of the best games on the docket in 2014. There is nothing quite like being there when the game is on the line and the Pads are digging in, as you'll end up with a great experience that you'll definitely be talking about a long time after it's all over.

San Diego Padres Team Info

The San Diego Padres play in the National League West division of Major League Baseball, a division that also features the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. The Padres put together some great runs last season, but a lack of consistency throughout the year saw them land in fourth place in the division. Starting with a talented lineup featuring Chase Headley and a rotation led by Andrew Cashner, this is a team that can do a little bit of everything, giving you plenty of reasons to head out and see if they have what it takes to get back into the playoff mix. Once you're there watching the Padres do their thing, you'll definitely be glad that you're not sitting anywhere else.

The MLB Experience

Seeing a baseball game in person is doing it the way it was meant to be done. Sure, watching the game at home on TV is decent, but it doesn't compare to the thrill of seeing the best players in the world hit the diamond right in front of your very eyes. The Padres will be taking on some of the best teams in Major League Baseball this season, and you can be there to witness all the action unfold right before you. The stadium will be packed with fans that love baseball, and that's something that makes for a great time for everyone involved. Not only will you have a good time, but a team always seems to play better when they've got a good home crowd behind them. With 81 home games this regular season, the Padres present their fans with plenty of chances to get out to Petco Park for a game this year. When the game is going down to the wire and the Pads are looking to put the final touches on a big win, home or away, you'll see that there is nothing quite like Major League Baseball.

San Diego Padres History

The San Diego Padres franchise was founded in 1969 and have called San Diego home for the direction of their history. The Padres have won the National League Pennant twice, once in 1984 and again in 1998. However, the Friars were unable to take home a World Series Championship on either occasion. As a result, baseball fans in San Diego still await the day when the Padres are crowned World Champions, but now they have an exciting team that is hoping to swing their way back to the Fall Classic much sooner than later. The Padres have also had their fair share of great players over the years, a list that includes Tony Gwynn and Ozzie Smith just to name the tip of the iceberg.

San Diego Padres Trivia

In addition to being one of the best Padres to ever play the game, Tony Gwynn spent most of his career as one of the top hitters in Major League Baseball. How many batting titles did this legendary hitter win over the course of his career?

The answer is an extremely impressive eight titles, including seasons in which he hit.394 and.372.

The Fans

The fans of the San Diego Padres love their baseball, and you can see that for yourself when you head out to a game this season. The Padres will be playing against their division rivals often, and the fans love to come out for those big matchups. When the Dodgers come to town, watch out, because the crowd is sure to get rowdy. It's always a good time at Petco Park, but even more so when the fans really get going. But don't forget about the away games, as watching the Padres on the road can be every bit as exciting.
