San Diego State Aztecs Football Tickets -The Schedule in 2014

The San Diego State Aztecs are coming off a very successful 2013 campaign, which saw the season end with a blowout win over the Buffalo Bulls in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl by the score of 49-24. The bowl appearance marks the fourth straight postseason bowl berth for the Aztecs and they are putting their name among the most powerful programs on the West Coast. The expectations are only getting higher for this Mountain West team, who is surely going to be looking to improve even more in the offseason.

The Aztecs will jump right into their Mountain West Conference schedule on September 27 with a visit from the UNLV Running Rebels. Played at Qualcomm Stadium in beautiful San Diego, the rivalry with the Running Rebels is always a fun one to watch and the fans will definitely bring their school spirit to the stadium that is guaranteed to be soaked in the Southern California sunshine. The UNLV Running Rebels are coming off a nice 2013 season which took them to their first bowl game since 2000, though they lost a virtual home game to North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Rebels know that this is a step in the right direction for their football program and will look to improve even more in the 2014 season. They will be without their star quarterback, Caleb Herring, who finished his Senior season with a nice performance in their bowl game appearance. The Aztecs will look to capitalize on the youth of the Rebels team and win this rival game at home.

A late season game that could have a lot of postseason implications for the Aztecs is the November 29 matchup with the San Jose State Spartans in San Diego. The Spartans finished just behind the Aztecs in the Mountain West's West Division, and the Spartans will definitely be looking to leapfrog their rivals in 2014. One of the most prolific passers in the game will lead the Spartans offense into Qualcomm Stadium, with Quarterback David Fales' 4189 passing yards and 33 touchdowns helping to make the Spartans the #6 passing offense in the country last season. The Aztecs defense will have their hands full with Fales, who lost his favorite target in All Mountain West Wide Receiver Chandler Jones in the offseason. This dangerous offense has plenty of weapons returning to the Spartans in 2014, and the Aztecs will have their hands full shutting them down.

San Diego State Aztecs Football Rivalries

In the Mountain West Conference, there are many rivalries that burn deep, resulting in some incredible football action. For the San Diego State Aztecs, look no further than their in-state rivals, the Fresno State Bulldogs. The San Diego State-Fresno State rivalry is known as the Battle for the Oil Can, and has been reborn since the two became members of the Mountain West Conference. The rivalry was heated from 1945-1979, but the rivalry lapsed after they began playing in different conferences. The Oil Can comes from a story where an oil can from Fresno was found in a San Diego construction site, with the relic believed to have been brought down by a Fresno State Bulldog fan on a trip to see a Bulldog-Aztec game. The oil can became a symbol of the long trek down the Highway 5 linking the two schools. The Aztecs hold the all time lead with a 27-22-4 record in the Battle for the Oil Can.

San Diego State Aztecs NFL Players

Over the 93 year history of the San Diego State Aztecs football program, many incredible players have taken the field donning the Scarlet and Black. There are a few, though, that stand above the rest and have excelled at the next level. The most famous of all of the Aztecs alumni is superstar running back Marshall Faulk, who played for San Diego State before being drafted with the second overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. The three time All American dominated college football in his time with the Aztecs, including a monumental game in 1991 against the University of Pacific when he rushed for 386 yards and 7 touchdowns on only 37 carries. Faulk won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams in 2000 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Other notable Aztecs in the NFL are Pro Bowl cornerback Willie Buchanon of the Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers,Denver Broncos Head Coach John Fox and Joe Gibbs, Hall of Fame Coach of the Washington Redskins.

San Diego Aztecs Trivia

Many San Diego Aztec football players have excelled on the field before going on to careers in the NFL. Two former Aztecs have gone from the NFL to Hollywood. Former Defensive End Fred Dryer helped lead the Aztecs to a 19-1-1 record in his junior and senior seasons when the Aztecs went all the way to #1 in the polls. After a very successful NFL career, Dryer went on to star in the popular cop dramaHunter.Another former Aztec to make it big in television and movies is former Linebacker Carl Weathers. Weathers lettered at San Diego State in 1968 and 1969 before a brief career in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. Leaving the sport to pursue his dream of acting, Weathers is most famous for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series costarring Sylvester Stallone.
