San Jose State Spartans History
San Jose State Spartans football program dates back to 1893 when they competed against local high schools and colleges. The
golden years of the Spartans program occurred in the 1930's and 40's when they were one of the most dominant football programs
in the country. With eight conference championships in a little over a decade, the Spartans put their football program on
the national map, especially with undefeated seasons in 1932 and 1939. The Spartans were an independent team from their inception
in 1893 to 1968 when they joined the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, where they remained until they joined the Big West
Conference in 1988. The Spartans were not destined to stay long in the Big West, moving to the Western Athletic Conference
in the mid 1990's, a move that proved quite beneficial for the Spartans. With two bowl victories during their tenure, the
Spartans were able to move once more, getting the call to the Mountain West Conference in 2013.

There are many active rivalries on the west coast, from USC-UCLA, Stanford-Cal and Arizona-Arizona
State. Within the Mountain West Conference, there are many that burn just as intense, including the Valley Rivalry between
the San Jose State Spartans and the Fresno State Bulldogs. Both of these programs have enjoyed a lot of success in their storied
histories, especially against each other. The Valley Rivalry, referencing the Central California Valley that connects the
two schools, began way back in 1921. Every season with bragging rights and the Valley Cup Trophy on the line, these two teams
always seem to rise to the occasion against each other. Though Fresno State currently leads the series between the two schools,
the margin is narrow.
