As a child, Carlos Santana was exposed to music at an early age. His father, Jose, was an acclaimed professional violinist, sparking Carlos' interest in learning to play the guitar at the the age of 8. Inspired by the American blues and rock-and-roll legends such as Little Richard, Ray Charles and B.B. King, Santana started performing in Tijuana clubs as a teenager. When his family moved to San Francisco, young Santana was able to see his idols perform live on stage. The move to San Francisco also opened up doors for Santana to other musical influences, including international folk music and jazz, and he had a front row seat to the expanding hippie movement on the West Coast in the 1960s. After working several odd jobs, Santana made the pivotal decision to make music his full-time career. In 1966, the Santana Blues Band was founded, taking their original Latin-infused rock, jazz, salsa, blues and African rhythms to the club scene. The band was well-received, culminating into a record contract with Columbia Records - one of many hallmark moments for Carlos Santana and his band.
