Scottish Rite Auditorium

History

The Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswod, NJ is one of the oldest and most treasured theaters in the country. It was built in the early 1930s, and was one of the premiere locations for vaudeville acts in New Jersey. It also acted as a movie house, screening the earliest forms of the film medium. The theater has become the place for some of the most exciting musical and theater acts in the country, and continues to be a bright spot in the cultural landscape of the New York Metro area.

It has been beautifully restored and still maintains some of its original fixtures and the style that drew music fans to the location for decades. The theater contains more than 1,000 seats that offer guests an unobstructed view of the top-notch acts that come to perform at the venue. Legendary performer David Crosby called the Scottish Rite Auditorium one of "the coolest places I've ever played." There's never a dull moment at this legendary concert venue, and when you come out to a star-studded performance, you will get to be a part of the venue's storied history.

Home City

The historic Scottish Rite Auditorium is located in the picturesque city of Collingswood, NJ—a borough in Camden County, NJ. The city is a unique city where there are less than 16,000 residents and alcohol cannot be sold. If you're looking for a great night of entertainment in a small town atmosphere, then this is the place for you. The town only covers two square miles and its legendary Haddon Avenue has been named one of the 10 Great Streets in America by the American Planning Association. Each Saturday, from May through November, the town hosts a Farmer's market that features produce, homemade food and crafts.

But don't let Collingswood's humble appearance fool you. The city is a hot spot for arts and entertainment. The annual book festival hosts authors like Camille Paglia, Matthew Quick who wrote the novel The Silver Linings Playbook, which was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film. The city has also hosted highly-anticipated live performances by artists like The Beach Boys and Ben Folds. And during the warmer months in the New Jersey town, the city puts on live, outdoor concerts and movies in the park. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, you will surely find something to entertain you when you are in Collingswood.

Seating Layout

The historic theater has the capacity to entertain 1,000 guests at the same time. There are several seating options for those who come to watch a performance by a local band, a live show featuring a legendary singer or a concert featuring the sounds of the season, and every seat in the house is a good one. The theater has rows two sections of comfortable seats. But if you feel so inclined, during a rousing live set, you can stand up and sing and dance along with the rest of the cheering fans.

And while the seats closest to the stage will get you a slightly better view of the performers on stage, the sections further back inside the theater give you breathtaking views of the intricate and historic decorations that adorn the walls of the theater. And with heavy, luxurious fabrics both on your seat and on stage, you will get the royal experience with every show.

Trivia

The Scottish Rite Auditorium has a long and storied history, and was the site of many amazing moments in entertainment history. But one of the most unique things about the venue is the city in which it resides. Collingswood is a unique location that packs a lot of history and excitement into a small space. The town is the site of several large, historic homes that date back as early as the 1700s. And the local Harleigh Cemetery includes a famous tenant—Walt Whitman. And if you're in the mood for some additional culture, Philadelphia is only five miles from this delightfully homey location.
