Shabazz Palaces is a hip hop collective that began in Seattle. They are led by the incomparable Ishmael Butler, who calls himself Palaceer Lazaro. He was once part of the jazz-rap group Digable Planets under the alias Butterfly, but left that group to start his own over-the-top, almost-psychedelic hip hop group. The same other-worldly elements that were a part of Digable Planets can be seen and heard in the live performances of Shabazz Palaces. Lazaro, percussionist Tendai Maraire and mixing engineer Erik Blood often adorn outrageous costumes and masks while performing their out-of-the-box hip hop music. Unlike other hip hop music that relies on 16 bars a chorus and repeat structure, Shabazz Palaces plays by their own rules, mixing up the structure and bending the music to their liking. Because of their songwriting skills, the group was awarded the first ever Music Genius Award from The Stranger in 2010.
